Defined CoS (SMS Guide), skilled worker guidance & health and care visa guidance updates following earlier Immigration Rules Statement of Changes

Defined certificate of sponsorship: SMS guide 12

This guide exists for sponsors who wish to apply for a defined certificate of sponsorship (CoS).

The sponsor management system (SMS) acts as the UKVI’s online portal for managing your daily tasks and sponsorship duties as an employer supporting workers and temporary worker visa holders. It helps you fulfil your obligations and meet regulatory requirements effectively.

The SMS system’s functions include:

  • Overseeing sponsor licence details and sponsored personnel
  • Creating CoS/CAS
  • Allocating and revoking CoS/CAS
  • Applying to increase the number of CoS/CAS

The screenshots of the sponsorship management system have been updated to reflect the changes in the immigration rules.

Skilled Worker visa: caseworker guidance

This guide is for caseworkers and explains the requirements that need to be considered for applications to enter, remain, or settle in the UK under the Skilled Worker route.

The updated guidance reflects the changes to the immigration rules in force from 11 March 2024, narrowing the eligibility for care workers and senior care workers in England to only be sponsored by organisations registered with the Care Quality Commission and currently engaged in regulated activities. These changes apply to applications made from March 11, 2024, with transitional arrangements for workers already in the route.

Applications made before this date (11 March 2024) are not affected by these changes.

Sponsor a Skilled Worker: guidance

This information in this guide is for employers and explains how to sponsor a worker under the Skilled Worker route.

This route allows employers to hire individuals for specific roles within eligible skilled occupations in the UK. It was introduced on December 1, 2020, as a replacement for the Tier 2 (General) route.

The updated guidance reflects the changes to the immigration rules in force from 11 March 2024, primarily affecting sponsors of care workers.

Health and Care visa: guidance for applicants

This guidance is intended to offer information on the Health and Care Visa which is a part of the Skilled Worker Visa.

Since the Health and Care Visa is presently included within the Skilled Worker category, individuals seeking to apply for it must satisfy all the requirements of the relevant pathway. This guide is in effect as of 11 March 2024.
